Google says the watermark is added at the time the content is created and is designed to remain detectable after common modifications such as cropping, filtering, changes in brightness and lossy compression.

Google has integrated SynthID detection into Gemini. Users can upload an image, video or audio file to Gemini and ask whether it was created or altered by Google AI. Google has also introduced a dedicated SynthID Detector to help verify content.
What is C2PA?
C2PA stands for the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity. It is an open technical standard designed to establish the provenance, or history, of digital content. The technology is commonly presented to users as Content Credentials.

Microsoft states that AI-generated images created within Microsoft 365 Copilot use Content Credentials based on the C2PA standard to help identify whether images were generated or edited using AI, viewable through the Content Credentials service.

- Neither is a universal AI detector: If an image does not contain SynthID, it does not prove a human made it. If an image has no C2PA credentials, it does not prove it is fake—the data may simply have been lost during a screenshot or processing.
- Provenance is not the same as truth: C2PA makes information verifiable and tamper-evident, but it does not evaluate whether the scene depicted actually happened in real life.
